چکیده

Tensions, emergence, and generative mechanisms are ubiquitous in complex sociotechnical systems in wide ranging contexts including but not limited to e-health, mobile platforms, integrated supply chains, innovation ecosystems, and online communities. Conflicting demands, contradictory practices, and competing views create tension that can energize or inhibit the emergence of effective action and create unintended consequences in complex socio-technical systems. There is a growing literature on tensions, duality, emergence, and generative mechanisms as alternatives to contingency and structural theories. Likewise, complexity theory and agent based modeling are increasingly being used to understand complex social phenomena in information systems and organizational research, particularly in the areas of interdependencies, emergence, and generative science. The track focuses on papers that theoretically or empirically advance our understanding of how tensions, emergence, and generative mechanisms can be leveraged, enhanced, and honed to create new and frame-breaking opportunities, enhance their understanding, and ensure successful coevolution of complex sociotechnical systems in dynamic environments.

Introduction to Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Minitrack

Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to ...

Design theory for dynamic complexity in information infrastructures: the case of building internet

We propose a design theory that tackles dynamic complexity in the design for Information Infrastructures (IIs) defined as a shared, open, heterogeneous and evolving socio-technical system of Information Technology (IT) capabilities. Examples of IIs include the Internet, or industry-wide Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) networks. IIs are recursively composed of other infrastructures, platforms,...

Modeling the Evolution of Generativity and the Emergence of Digital Ecosystems

Recent literature on sociotechnical systems has employed the concept of generativity to explain the remarkable capacity for digital artifacts to support decentralized innovation and the emergence of rich business ecosystems. In this paper, we propose agent-based computational modeling as a tool for studying the evolution of generativity, and offer a set of building blocks for constructing agent...

Introduction to the Minitrack on Information Systems in Global Business

An global business represents a complex network communication, coordination, and decision making. Information and telecommunication technology (IT) continues to play a crucial role in the organization and management of global businesses. In some cases these systems are enabling fundamental shifts in the structure of global markets. Recognizing the importance of the link between IT and structure...

Introduction to the Learning Health Systems, Big Data, and Socio-technical Change Minitrack

Healthcare systems around the world are, at long last, becoming digital systems—probably the last economic sector to undergo this transformation. In the United States, approximately 50% of office practices now have at least basic electronic health record systems; and the same is true for over 80% of hospitals. Some nations, most notably in Northern Europe, have had almost completely digital hea...
